Causes of Strabismus
Many people are born with eyes that do not align in the typical way. This is known as congenital Strabismus. In many children, there is no exact cause of Strabismus. In some cases, it occurs as a result of some problem in nervous system, especially the part that helps in controlling the eyes muscles. If not corrected on time, it can continue to grow even in the adult years.
Following are some disorders that may cause Strabismus in children:
- Trisomy 18 – it is a condition in which an infant has three copies of chromosome 18inspite of two.
- Rubella – German measles
- Apert Syndrome – A skin disease that may lead to changes and blistering in skin colour
- Cerebral palsy
- Noonan Syndrome – it is a genetic disorder that may lead to the abnormal development of body
- Brain injury
- Prader-Willi Syndrome
Strabismus can develop in adults because of the following reasons;
- Diabetes
- Stroke
- Eye Injury
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Guillain Barre Syndrome
It often runs in family and far sightedness can further contribute to its development.
