Modern versus Orthodox Cataract Surgery
Modern versus Orthodox Cataract Surgery
In the last decade, cataract surgery has taken big strides. It has become a simple, painless and quick procedure.
It does not require staying in hospital for more than a day or two. The technology of orthodox cataract surgery where the person had to stay in hospital for five to seven days, restricted to the bed in a darkroom with insufficient diet and nutrition is a thing of the past. The patient would have to wear a thick and heavy pair of glasses which were an obstacle to free movement. A person wearing such glasses could not see when he was not wearing glasses.
The replacement of cataract with modem intraocular lens is the most recent addition to cataract surgery. It is accepted all over the world and has come to stay in India too. Intraocular lenses have done away with the requirement of wearing thick glasses which traditional surgery necessitated. The glasses after an intraocular lens surgery are thin and small-powered. It is a myth that no glasses are required after a lens implant; ordinary glasses are required, more so for close work.
