Presence of Eye Diseases
Screening the Presence of Eye Diseases
The following age groups are the landmarks of a person’s life when a complete eye check-tip to screen any Type of eye disease is absolutely vital:
1. Pre-school – 4 to 10 years
2. Pre-college – 15 to 20 years
3. Presbyopic – 40 to 45 years
4. Old Age – 60 to 65 years
Children and Adolescents
There are certain eye problems that are overlooked and neglected in school-going children and those in college, e.g. refractive errors, lazy eyes, developmental diseases of retina and ‘brain squints, opacities of cataract and cornea. These can lead to partial or complete blindness. They can only be detected by routine examinations at the eye clinic of the school or college or in a hospital. Enough cannot be said to emphasize the importance of routine check-ups for the care of the eyes and for the prevention of eye diseases.
Adults
In adults, diseases like glaucoma, cataract, errors of refraction, diabetes, blood pressure, diseases of the retina and vitreous, etc. can be detected by routine eye examinations.
Nature has given us two eyes and one eye often compensates for the other. But, for the same reason, a defect in one eye can be overlooked if the other eye is functioning normally. A screen examination of each eye in an eye clinic at the aforementioned ages can detect the presence of eye disease and enables the specialist to specify the treatment.
