Depth Perception, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment & Surgery
Eyes form an essential part of the human body. They always need tender care for protection from various diseases or injuries. There are some serious diseases to which the eyes are susceptible. Here, depth perception will be dealt with to give you a clear idea regarding the same matter. It is actually the visual ability which helps you to see the world in a three-dimensional form. It helps you to perceive the distance of an object. It also helps you to make the correct moves in response to the distances of objects in the surroundings. When this ability is affected then you can be sure of some visual defect.
Depth perception may be affected by optical conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia and optic nerve hypoplasia. Variety of depth cues give rise to this visual ability which are classified into monocular cues and binocular cues. Binocular cues require input from both the eyes whereas monocular cues require input from only one eye. Both these cues provide depth information. The way to determine the defects in perception of depth of human beings is to take note of certain symptoms which can be inability to assess the distance of some nearby objects like a vehicle, house, buildings etc. There will be overall haziness in vision.
The causes for affecting depth perception include impaired vision, parallax, strabismus etc. This strabismus is actually the main cause among various others responsible for this eye defect. It is also commonly referred to as cross-eyes. The corresponding abnormalities can be detected here because the alignment of the eyes can be checked easily by performing some simple eye tests. However, if it is left untreated then it is sure to lead to problems in perception of depth and amblyopia. In addition to these, conditions such as hypertension, cholesterol and diabetes also play a crucial role in affecting your normal vision.
Depth perception defect can be definitely treated and effective treatment methodologies are available for this purpose. Colors are basically employed to bring harmony in vision by using color filters for better and quicker reading of pages. But it is a trial and error method to determine which color appears more compatible with your eyes. To deal with this problem special glasses have been devised using some colored lenses. Corrective contact lenses also may be used. Again, eating nutritious food for example Vitamin A diet is strongly recommended for the concerned patients. In extreme cases you may have to resort to surgery.
Depending on the type of visual defect the method of surgery may vary from patient to patient. Those who have put on glasses after undergoing an eye operation may opt for a laser surgery to enhance their vision such that they will be able to do without them. This type of surgery is suitable for mainly for cosmetic reasons. However if you are suffering from eye diseases like presbyopia then it is not advisable for you to undergo laser surgery. But laser surgery has the advantage that it usually takes a lesser time for recovery and causes very less pain.
