All About CMV Retinitis
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Retinitis is a common eye infection. CMV is one of the most common viruses. In fact, more than fifty and eighty five per cent of the people will test positive for this virus by the time they turn forty. The natural defense of body controls the CMV in the immune system of healthy people. However, people who have weak immune system like those on immunosuppressive therapies for organ transplant or cancer, or who are suffering from advanced HIV/AIDS – this virus can affect the whole body. The weak immune system of the body fails to keep the virus at bay and thus allows it to attack the areas all through the body.
CMV retinitis always attacks the retina, thus, affecting the light sensitive receptors, leading to vision decrease in women and acuity reduction. In the absence of accurate treatment, blindness and detached retina can be cause within a period of two to six months.
